我可以去厕所吗?

Yesterday, in Chinese class, someone needed to go to the toilet.
The Chinese teacher said, "But it's only just been lunchtime!"
Whoever it was said that she was busy during lunch time.
I yelled across at her, "Say it in Chinese, then the teacher will say yes!"
She countered, "But I don't know how to speak Chinese!"
I yelled back, "我可以去厕所吗?"

Someone said, "What?"
Someone else said, "I agree!"

Today, in Chinese class, someone asked me how to say "Can I please go to the toilet?" in Chinese.
I wrote "Wǒ kěyǐ qù cèsuǒ ma?" on a piece of paper and gave it to him. He went up to the teacher and pointed to what I had written.
She said, "Nǐ shuō..." (You say...). He didn't understand. He thought that she was giving him permission, so he said, "Thankyou!" and turned to leave, but then the teacher repeated her request in English. He read out the words and the teacher then granted him permission. He said, "Thankyou!" again, this time to me, and left. My friend and I burst out laughing. It was pretty funny.

  1. Wait, so She said she doesn't know how to speak chinese, then you say that you need to go to the toilet, then someone says "I agree!"???
Did that person know what you were saying?

  2. Yeah, that's what happened. And no that person didn't understand what they were saying, which was precisely why they said, "I agree."
